beloved fruit

I can't prepare for a show without making a couple of paintings of fruit.  I love painting fruit, especially apples and pears.  I never tire of either.  I also love working in a square format.  There's something deeply satisfying about a square.

Two small pieces I did as a pair for my upcoming show at The Harrison Gallery. The antique pitchers are from my mother's collection. My mom has some gorgeous, gorgoeus pieces....and I have open access to them, yet I don't have to dust! Perfect. My son tells me he prefers red apples to yellow (in paintings, as well as for eating), but I like the yellow/blue palette in these pieces. Unfortunately, they were difficult to photograph, so these are not very good images.

apples again?

I'm drawn to working in series. I'll often have a whole series planned and sketched with reference photos.... I paint one or two and get distracted by some other subject. But then in time I find myself coming back to my neglected series and working some more. There's an interesting tidal quality to the pattern. I just sit back and watch.

I don't tend to find any deep meaning in my series. There's no symbolism, no allegory, no whatever. It's more a communion with the objects and the play of light, and the way anything takes on a kind of sacredness if you look at it long enough. An apple ceases to be just an apple and becomes a living, breathing piece of something far greater than myself. I think that's what this is about for me--breathlessly seeking, again and again, that unspoken connection with the divine.

So I'll probably paint a lot more apples.

These three paintings came out of a challenge at www.artandartistry.com, to create a painting that included an apple, a napkin, and a spoon. (Alert viewers will notice I left the spoon out of the center one.) I only planned to do one of these, but somehow I just couldn't stop! Apples and napkins remain favorite subjects. Some might say I'm obsessed...
